Portia Lee James DeGeneres, well-known professionally as the pseudonym Portia de Rossi, is a well-known model from the United States actress, philanthropist, and actor. She changed her name legally when she was 15, taking the name of 'Portia' which comes from the Shakespearean production 'The Merchant of Venice'. She then adopted the Italian name 'de Rossi' which she found to be glamorous. Portia declares that it's the most brave choice she's made. The struggle she had with her sexuality spurred her to change names. Portia began her journey in the film industry with the romantic-comedy comedy film "Sirens," starring Hugh Grant. Portia also played a role in several American TV shows and films such as Too Something, Nick Freno, The Licensed Teacher, Arrested Development, as well as, Better Off Ted. She was famous for her character as a lawyer from Boston, named Nelle Porter in a television comedy show called Ally McBeal. Her character was the show's main comedy relief.
